Hand colored antique botanical copperplate engraving from England in good condition.
We are pleased to offer this print of the Elegant Xeranthemum from
the Curtis Botanical Magazine first published by William Curtis beginning in 1787. This
engraving is Plate # 420, dated September 1, 1798, drawn by S. Edwards and engraved by F.
Sansom. There are a few small spots (see image) not unusual for a print of this age which nevertheless do not detract from its beauty.
Mr. Curtis was a trained pharmacist living in London, whose greater interest
was the study of flora and insects. He maintained a large garden where he grew beautiful
exotic plants.
Highly collectible, and increasingly hard-to-find in this condition; this botanical engraving
still has the original vivid coloration. Guaranteed authentic 206 year-old engraving on rag
paper. The original text page will accompany this engraving.
Antique engravings are a unique gift idea and make a fine complement to any home or
office.
Print size is 5 1/2" x 9 1/2".
