Hand colored antique botanical copperplate engraving from England in
excellent condition.
We are pleased to offer this print of this exquisite Gladiola (Gladiolus Hastatus) - the "Spade Corn Flag" - from the Curtis Botanical Magazine first published by William
Curtis beginning in 1787. This engraving is Plate #1564, dated July 1, 1813, drawn by S. Edwards and engraved by F. Sansom. Mr. Curtis was a
trained pharmacist living in London, whose greater interest was the study
of flora and insects. He maintained a large garden where he grew beautiful exotic plants.
Highly collectible, and increasingly hard-to-find in this condition; this botanical engraving still
has the original vivid coloration. Guaranteed authentic 189 year-old engraving on rag paper.
