Hand colored antique botanical copperplate engraving from England in
excellent condition.
We are pleased to offer this print of the Spermacoce Strigosa - Cross Wort Button Weed - from the Curtis Botanical Magazine first published by William
Curtis beginning in 1787. This engraving is Plate #1558, dated June 1, 1813 drawn by S. Edwards and engraved by F. Sansom. Mr. Curtis was a
trained pharmacist living in London, whose greater interest was the study
of flora and insects. He maintained a large garden where he grew beautiful exotic plants.
Highly collectible, and increasingly hard-to-find in this condition; this botanical engraving still
has the original vivid coloration. Guaranteed authentic 190 year-old engraving on rag paper.
The original text page will accompany this engraving. It states in part: "This plant was found in the island of Cuba by Mr. John Fraser, and seeds of it were brought to this country and cultivated at the nursery in Sloane Square, where our drawing was made last year."
Antique engravings are a unique gift idea and make a fine complement to any home or office.
Print size is 5 1/2" x 9".
