This is a new and unique art expression, created by South African artist Américo N. Bonkewitzz. Each picture is a detailed assemblage of small pieces of butterfly
wings matching the right color and plumage pattern of a particular bird species. Each bird is finely crafted so that the species and in some cases gender are
recognizable. Each artwork comes framed. Additionally, all pictures have been legally imported into the United States exclusively by Kallima
Consultants, Inc., and in compliance with all U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Permit Regulations for artworks created from animal material.
All butterflies in this artwork were raised in butterfly farms which breed them specifically for zoos and butterfly houses around the world. They are not wild caught.
These farms promote environmental preservation and habitat conservation.
This is accomplished by providing a
market for invertebrates from developing
countries. The export of live invertebrates,
especially butterfly pupae, has been proven in
many instances to provide indigenous peoples in
developing countries with an economically
sustainable, renewable product of much greater
value than resources derived from the one-time
destruction of the forests.
